We’ve recently had an “incident” on the Smoke Signals Messageboard that has led us to make a few (what we think should have been obvious) points about the reason for our messageboard – and for many others inside and outside our community.
1. The board is there for members of the community to discuss on-topic subjects – and to have fun. “Fun” in our eyes does not include personal attacks on other posters.
One poster this week (in the context of a discussion about “what you would do if you picked up a very sexy smoker and found out that he was a she”) basically admitted his lack of knowledge of the difference between cross-dressers, transsexuals, and the transgendered.
Another poster immediately assumed that the post was about him and launched a personal attack against the first poster.
We then spent the day deleting posts from the second poster, who tried in a number of ways to rephrase his personal attack and make the thread about him – when the thread had nothing to do with him. He had some valid points about how some of the original poster’s comments could be considered offensive by members of the cross-dressing, TS or TG communities – but his purpose was not to educate. It was to attack the first poster for his lack of knowledge, and to make himself the center of the discussion.
Eventually the second poster gave up, and in email exchanges, accused us of deleting his posts for “financial” reasons.
We explained to him that there’s no financial incentive for us to provide the messageboard – and that it actually would be a relief to us to kill the board, since we spend so much time patrolling it for spam – but that we maintain it to have a gathering place for discussions. It seems that wasn’t good enough for him, and he’s apparently leaving the board.
The point is – the board is for fun, entertaining and informative posts – not for personal attacks or posts making oneself the center of the “action.”
Hope that’s clear
2. Most regular posters know this, but to reiterate – the board is there for discussion and not for promotion. We don’t even promote our own updates or products on the board – and we expect the same courtesty from others, especially those posting “drive-by” spam without participating in the regular discussions.
Hope that clears things up
